Alkaline Water: Benefits and Risks

What is alkaline water?

You may have heard different health claims about alkaline water. Some say it helps slow down the aging process, regulate your body’s pH levels, and help prevent chronic diseases such as cancer. But what exactly is alkaline water, and why are all hype?

Alkaline “alkaline” in water refers to its pH level. The pH level is a number that measures acids or alkaline substances on a scale of 0 to 14. For example, something with a pH of 1 would be very acidic and something with a pH of 13 would be very alkaline.

basic water has a higher pH level than regular drinking water. Because of this, some basic water supporters believe that it can neutralize the acid in your body.

Normal drinking water usually has a neutral pH of 7.. basic water generally has a pH of 8 or 9. However, pH alone is not sufficient to provide sufficient water.

Basic water must also have alkaline minerals and negative oxidation potential (ORP). The ORP is a water vapor that acts as an anti-oxidant. The more negative the ORP value is, the more antioxidating it is.

Does it really work?

Alkaline water is somewhat controversial. Many health professionals say there is not enough research to support many health claims made by consumers and sellers. Differences in research results may be related to the types of alkaline water studies.

According to the Mayo Clinic, regular water is best for most people. They say there is no scientific evidence that fully confirms the claims of basic water supporters.

However, there are some studies that suggest that basic water may be helpful for certain conditions.

For example, a 2012 study Trusted Source found that drinking naturally carbonated artesin basic water at 8.8 pH could help to neutralize pepsin, an important enzyme that causes acid reflux.

Another study suggests that drinking alkaline ionized water can have benefits for people with hypertension, diabetes, and high cholesterol.

A recent study, involving 100 people, showed a significant difference in whole blood concentrations after drinking pH faster than regular water after a strenuous exercise. Viscosity is a direct measure of how effectively blood flows to vessels.

People who used high pH water had a decrease in viscosity by 6.3 percent compared to 3.36 percent of standard drinking water. This means that alkaline blood flows more efficiently with water. This can increase oxygen delivery throughout the body.

However, further research is needed beyond these small studies. Specifically, research is needed to answer other claims of basic water supporters.

Despite the lack of proven scientific research, basic water supporters believe in its proposed health benefits. These include:

  • Anti-aging properties (through liquid antioxidants that are absorbed more quickly into the human body)
  • Colon cleansing properties.
  • Supports immune system
  • Hydration, skin health, and other detoxification features.
  • Weight loss
  • Cancer Resistance

They also argue that soft drinks, which are notoriously acidic, have very positive ORPs that cause a lot of health problems, while properly ionized and alkalinized waters have extremely negative ORPs. Are. Green tea is rich in antioxidants and has a slightly negative ORP.

Possible side effects and risks of alkaline water

Although alkaline drinking water is considered safe, it can have negative side effects.

Some examples of adverse side effects include lowering your stomach’s acidity, helping to kill bacteria and other unwanted diseases from entering your bloodstream.

In addition, excessive levels of alkalinity in the body can cause gastrointestinal issues and skin irritation. Too much alkalinity can also aggravate the body’s normal pH, leading to metabolic alkalosis, a condition that can cause the following symptoms.

  • Nausea
  • Ultimate
  • Hand tremors
  • Muscle twitching
  • Disputes over boundaries or faces.
  • Confusion

Alkalosis can also cause a decrease in free calcium in the body, which can affect bone health. However, the most common cause of paplycemia is not drinking alkaline water, but rather reducing the parathyroid gland.

Artificial or Natural?

When water is naturally alkaline, water passes like rocks – like springs – and carries minerals, which increase its excretion level.

However, many people who drink alkaline water buy alkaline water through a chemical process called electrolysis.

This technique uses a product called ionizer to regularly increase the pH of water. The ionizers say electricity is used to separate molecules in water that are more acidic or more alkaline. The acidic water is then drained out.

Still, some doctors and researchers say these claims do not support standard research. Prior to ionization, the water quality of the original source is very important to ensure that drinking water does not have any contamination.

Some scientists suggest the use of reverse osmosis to properly purify water before connecting the basic ionizers, which can increase pH and increase mineralization.

A study published by the World Health Organization  warns against drinking water with low mineral content, which is produced on a regular basis by reverse osmosis, Australian and other methods (without additional minerals).

Where do you get it?

Alkaline water can be purchased at many grocery or health food stores. It can also be found online.

Water ionizers are also sold in many major China stores.

You can even make your own at home. Although lemon and lime juice are acidic, they are found in minerals that can produce an alkaline supplement once digested and metabolized. Adding lemon or lemon extract to a glass of water makes your water more alkaline as your body digests. Another way to make water more alkaline is to add pH drops or baking soda.

If water is properly filtered to remove contamination, ionized and reclaimed, or purchased from a quality source, there is no evidence of how much alkaline water may be used daily.

Is it safe?

The problem that many health professionals have with alkaline water is not its protection, but their health claims.

There is not enough scientific evidence to support the use of alkaline water as a treatment for any health condition. Medical experts warn against asserting all marketing claims.

Drinking natural alkaline water is generally considered safe, as it contains natural minerals.

However, you should use caution about synthetic Basic water, which is less likely to have good minerals than its high pH, you believe, and may include contamination. Also, keep in mind that drinking too much basic water can make you deficient in minerals.
